2006-05-29

Scott attended Memorial Day Service in Grand Island Monday, joining hundreds who turned out to honor the memory of those who have made the utltimate sacrifice, and to show support for those serving in our armed forces today.

After the advancing of the color guard, Hall County Veterans’ Service Officer Don Shuda introduced the featured speaker, Grand Island Mayor Jay Vavricek. Mayor Vavricek gave a moving speech in honor of veterans "across the nation," and paid special tribute to Hall County Veterans.

Of those Hall County residents who served in WWII, more than 80 lost their lives, Vavricek said. Five Hall County residents fell in the Vietnam conflict. To date, three have been killed in action in Iraq, including Marine Pvt. Noah L. Boye, who was killed in action near Falluja on April 13, 2004. Boye’s mother, Diana Barela, was in the audience Monday. Asked by Vavricek to stand, she was recognized with prolonged applause by the audience.

According to the Associated Press, more than 700 hundred Nebraskans attended Boye’s funeral two years ago, when he was laid to rest with full military honors at Grand Island’s Evangelical Free Church.
